Nintendo has officially unveiled a brand-new design for Donkey Kong, set to debut in the upcoming 3D platformer Donkey Kong Bananza, releasing on July 17, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the character’s first headline appearance in a 3D adventure since the cult-classic Donkey Kong 64.

Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto recently shared insights into the visual overhaul, revealing that the redesign is rooted in a desire to give Donkey Kong a broader emotional range and a more expressive presence. Thanks to advancements in Nintendo’s animation tech, the updated model allows for nuanced facial expressions and smoother character motion—something Miyamoto emphasized as a priority since the days of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

Interestingly, the new look isn’t a reaction to the character’s portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, despite clear visual similarities. Miyamoto noted that the new design was conceptualized long before the film’s release. It blends nostalgic elements from the original arcade-era Donkey Kong with a modern, animated charm that feels consistent across Nintendo’s expanding media universe.

Donkey Kong Bananza will feature colorful sandbox-style levels, destructible environments, and gameplay mechanics designed to showcase the character’s renewed agility and personality. With its blend of retro spirit and next-gen polish, this upcoming release aims to reintroduce Donkey Kong to both longtime fans and a new generation of players.
