Rescue Rangers was released on Disney+ last month, a nostalgic feelgood movie in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit complete with a bunch of cameos from characters from very unexpected universes.

One of them is Ugly Sonic, who would once be the main character in the Sonic movies. But his almost comically bad design led to an angry uprising among the fans and thankfully got Paramount to redo the character – to what turned out to be a great success. Since then, we have not seen the ugly hedgehog until he appeared in Rescue Rangers under the name Ugly Sonic, but apparently the idea was originally to give Jar Jar Binks that role.

Binks made his debut in The Phantom Menace from 1999, but was so hated by fans that George Lucas slimmed him down to a minimum in the two sequels. Exactly why Binks was fired in favor of Ugly Sonic is unknown, but storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins has now shared an animatic on his Instagram that gives us an impression of what it would have been like with Jar Jar Binks’ return.
