In a move that will sting gamers’ wallets just in time for the holiday season, Sony has confirmed a $50 increase across its PlayStation 5 lineup in the United States, effective August 21, 2025. The updated pricing sees:

  • Standard PS5: jumps from $499.99 to $549.99
  • Digital Edition: rises from $449.99 to $499.99
  • PS5 Pro: climbs from $699.99 to $749.99

Sony does not plan to adjust prices for accessories or game titles at this time.

What’s Fueling This Price Hike?

Sony attributes the increase to a broader “challenging economic environment,” with analysts pinning the blame on newly imposed import tariffs. These duties—introduced by the Trump administration—have upended cost structures across the tech sector, particularly affecting consoles made overseas.

A Growing Trend—Console Prices on the Rise

Sony isn’t alone. Microsoft and Nintendo have already raised their console prices earlier this year in response to the same pressure. Analysts warn these hikes are just the beginning as hardware makers contend with inflation, tariffs, and disrupted supply chains.

Shop Now or Pay More Tomorrow

If you’ve been holding off, now might be the time to pull the trigger—retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart are still selling PS5s at current prices, at least until the new rates kick in tomorrow.
