Rumors Suggest Upcoming Zelda Movie Will Be a Trilogy Filmed in New Zealand
Nintendo’s highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda movie might be more ambitious than initially expected. New rumors suggest that the upcoming film isn’t just a standalone adventure, but the first installment in a full-blown trilogy.
According to industry insider reports, the movie is set to begin filming in New Zealand from November 2025 through April 2026. The lush landscapes of the country—famously used in the Lord of the Rings films—seem like a perfect fit for bringing the kingdom of Hyrule to life on the big screen.
The movie will follow Link, the iconic green-clad hero, as he embarks on a dangerous journey to protect Hyrule from the villainous Ganon. Expect epic dungeon crawls, magical relics, and plenty of puzzle-solving along the way. While specific plot details remain under wraps, it’s clear the film is aiming to stay true to the adventurous spirit of the legendary game series.
Production is being handled by Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto and seasoned Hollywood producer Avi Arad, known for his work on numerous Marvel films. Directing duties fall to Wes Ball, who previously helmed the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Perhaps most intriguingly, casting rumors suggest the leads are signing on for three films across a six-year span—fueling speculation that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are aiming to build a cinematic Zelda universe.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie smashing box office records, Nintendo clearly sees a future for its franchises beyond gaming. All eyes will be on Link when he finally steps into theaters on March 26, 2027.
