Veteran filmmaker Ridley Scott recently delivered a scathing critique of today’s film industry, bluntly declaring that many modern movies are simply “shit.” During an appearance at the BFI in London, he lamented the sheer volume of films released nowadays and argued that most lack genuine craftsmanship.

Scott claimed we’re drowning in mediocrity: only a small fraction of modern productions, whether for theaters or streaming, meet a basic level of quality. Many rely heavily on digital effects to paper over weak stories. He contrasted this with the past, when fewer films were made but a higher proportion had substance.

He also confessed that, in times of frustration, he revisits his own earlier work—not out of nostalgia, but because he still finds them compelling and “they don’t age.” Despite his critiques, Scott left a sliver of hope, acknowledging that a few standout films do still emerge from the clutter.
