A month ago, Nintendo and Sony surprised the gaming community with an announcement that deviated from the anticipated animated Zelda venture. Instead of an animated feature, the companies revealed plans for a live-action film adaptation of the beloved Zelda franchise. Although scant details are currently available, Wes Ball, known for his work on “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” has been confirmed as the director.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ball shed more light on the project and his vision for the film. Contrary to expectations of a grand fantasy spectacle, it appears that Ball is drawing inspiration from a different source. He expressed a desire to capture the wonder and whimsy akin to a live-action Miyazaki film:

“I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that. It’s going to be awesome. My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda, and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special.”
