Epic Games is once again pushing the boundaries of how players unlock content in Fortnite. This time, a brand-new skin called Clyde can’t be earned in-game or bought from the Item Shop. Instead, players must purchase a Backbone Pro Controller — a mobile gaming accessory priced around $160 — to get access.

When you buy the controller, you’ll receive a code that unlocks a special in-game quest. Completing this quest is the only way to obtain the Clyde skin, making it one of the more exclusive cosmetics in the game right now.

What’s raising eyebrows is the shift in strategy. Rather than simply offering the skin for V-Bucks or tying it to a traditional event, Epic has linked it directly to a physical product. That means unless you’re already in the market for a Backbone controller, unlocking Clyde will cost far more than any typical cosmetic.

Previously, there were rumors that Clyde could be unlocked by gaining XP on specific platforms like PC or mobile — but that route appears to be unavailable for now. Whether the skin will be added to the Item Shop in the future remains to be seen.
