PlayStation Portal May Soon Work Without a PS5
According to new reports, Sony is preparing to unlock a major new feature for its PlayStation Portal handheld — the ability to stream games directly from the cloud, without needing a PlayStation 5 console. This would mark a significant upgrade for the device, which has so far relied entirely on a PS5 for game streaming over a local network.
The feature is said to be in beta testing, allowing users to access PS5 titles via Sony’s cloud streaming service, provided they’re subscribed to the PlayStation Plus Premium tier. This means the Portal could essentially become a portable PlayStation experience, removing the requirement for console ownership altogether in some cases.
While still limited to certain regions and a select list of compatible titles, the move could reshape how Sony positions the PlayStation Portal. What was once seen as a niche companion accessory might soon compete more directly with other streaming handhelds like Logitech’s G Cloud or the Razer Edge.
There’s no word yet on when the feature will roll out globally or whether Sony will expand the supported game library. However, if successful, this update could make the Portal far more appealing — especially to gamers who want access to their favorite titles on the go without the need for bulky hardware.
