Nintendo confirms that 160,000 accounts may have been hijacked
Earlier this week, it became known that a bunch of Nintendo accounts had been hacked and Nintendo told them that they would investigate the matter further. Now the company has announced that nearly 160,000 Nintendo accounts have been compromised and information such as username, email address, date of birth and gender may have come in the wrong hands. Nintendo also announces that purchases may have been made through the accounts, but no credit card information should have leaked.
According to Nintendo, the old Nintendo Network ID accounts are the culprit. These were used on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems and due to the use of on-screen keyboards on these devices, people did not enter difficult passwords. And with the new Nintendo account, it has been possible to log in with old NNID account information, which made it a little easier for crooks to access the new Nintendo accounts. In connection with this, Nintendo has removed the possibility to log in to the Nintendo account with the NNID information.
Nintendo also announces that purchases made on hacked accounts will be refunded badly.
Anyway. If you have a Nintendo account, you should enable two-step verification very quickly.
