GTA VI pre-orders are huge, but the $500 million figure needs context

Grand Theft Auto VI is still three months away, but outside estimates suggest Rockstar’s next blockbuster is already generating hundreds of millions of dollars in pre-orders. Sensor Tower’s GTA VI sales tracker has recently put pre-orders at roughly 4.3 million copies, with PlayStation 5 accounting for 77% of the total and Xbox Series X|S taking the remaining 23%.

Those figures are estimates rather than official sales numbers from Rockstar Games or parent company Take-Two Interactive, which is an important distinction. Gamereactor reported that pre-order revenue had passed $500 million, but other reporting based on Sensor Tower’s tracker on August 18 cited approximately 4.38 million pre-orders and $429 million in gross revenue. The precise total therefore remains unconfirmed and appears to vary as the tracker updates.

PS5 is dominating the estimated pre-order split

The platform breakdown is nevertheless striking. Sensor Tower’s estimate gives PS5 roughly three quarters of all GTA VI pre-orders so far. One recent snapshot placed PlayStation at about 3.38 million copies and Xbox at just over one million, corresponding to an estimated $331 million and $98 million in gross pre-order revenue respectively.

There is another unusual detail behind those revenue numbers: early buyers are overwhelmingly choosing the more expensive version. Sensor Tower data reported by multiple outlets indicates that around 89% of GTA VI pre-orders are for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition rather than the $79.99 Standard Edition. On PlayStation the Ultimate share was estimated at 88.5%, while Xbox was around 90%.

That is far outside the normal pattern for premium editions. Sensor Tower executive Karl Kontus has said premium versions of games typically account for around 10–20% of pre-orders, with even a 50% share considered strong. GTA VI’s earliest customers are clearly not representative of a typical launch audience, however, and the premium share could fall as more mainstream buyers arrive closer to release.

Take-Two confirms huge demand, but not the numbers

Take-Two has not published a unit total, revenue figure or platform split for GTA VI pre-orders. What it has confirmed is that demand has been exceptional. CEO Strauss Zelnick recently described the level of pre-orders as “unprecedented and astonishing,” while also cautioning that the company does not yet know exactly how that early demand will translate into final sales.

That caution matters when interpreting third-party trackers. Sensor Tower can provide a useful indication of momentum, but its numbers should not be treated as audited Rockstar sales data. The safest conclusion is that GTA VI has made an unusually strong start to pre-orders, with PS5 currently estimated to hold a commanding lead and the $100 Ultimate Edition attracting an exceptionally large proportion of early buyers.

GTA VI launches on November 19

Rockstar officially opened pre-orders on June 25. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 in the US, while the Ultimate Edition is $99.99. Rockstar’s own store and Take-Two’s investor materials continue to list November 19, 2026 as the release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The next few months should provide a much clearer picture of how far the early enthusiasm extends beyond GTA’s most committed fans. For now, the headline is not that Rockstar has officially banked a particular dollar amount before launch—it hasn’t disclosed one—but that independent estimates and Take-Two’s own comments both point to an exceptionally large pre-order campaign.
