Microsoft reportedly aimed for a more affordable launch price for the ROG Xbox Ally, but rising costs and economic uncertainty forced a last-minute change.

Initial leaks suggested that the base model would launch at $549.99 and the premium “X” version at $899.99. However, the final prices ended up being $599.99 and $999.99 respectively when officially unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show. According to insider reports, Microsoft had been pushing for the lower pricing internally, but external factors complicated the plan.

One of the key reasons behind the pricing shift was said to be the broader economic climate. Microsoft reportedly held off on finalizing the prices until as late as August, waiting to assess market conditions, supply chain costs, and inflation. These late decisions indicate that the company was trying to strike a balance between competitiveness and profitability in a challenging environment.

Retail leaks in Sweden also aligned with the higher price point, suggesting that the adjustment wasn’t just regional but part of a global pricing strategy. It remains to be seen whether the higher cost will affect the handheld’s success, especially in a market that’s becoming increasingly saturated with premium portable gaming devices.
