EA Lays Off Hundreds and Shuts Down Titanfall Project
Electronic Arts (EA) is undergoing a major internal restructuring, leading to the layoff of several hundred employees across its global operations. Among the affected divisions is Respawn Entertainment, where around 100 staff members have reportedly lost their jobs. This strategic shift also includes the cancellation of a highly anticipated but unannounced project set in the Titanfall universe.
The now-defunct title, internally referred to as “R7,” was believed to be a spiritual successor to Titanfall 2 and had been in early development at Respawn. The decision to cancel the game came as part of EA’s broader realignment strategy, aimed at focusing resources on existing successful franchises and high-performing live service titles.
The layoffs hit multiple departments including game development, publishing, quality assurance, and EA’s customer experience team. The impact has been widespread, with cuts affecting not just project teams, but also roles in support and marketing. EA has stated that it will assist displaced employees through redeployment where possible, and provide severance packages to help with the transition.
These moves follow a challenging period for EA, including underwhelming sales for EA Sports FC 25 and earlier cuts at BioWare. The company insists that it remains committed to ongoing support for key franchises like Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series, with Respawn continuing to lead those efforts.
For fans hoping for a true Titanfall 3, this news is particularly disappointing. Despite occasional teases over the years, it now appears that any return to the franchise is firmly on hold—if not shelved indefinitely.
