Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets a Switch 2 Upgrade
Nintendo has confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive a dedicated version for its next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation about the franchise’s future and confirms that the fan-favorite life sim is being optimized for the new hardware.
Originally released in 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, New Horizons became a global phenomenon, especially during the pandemic years. With over 40 million copies sold, it’s no surprise that Nintendo wants to extend the game’s lifespan into the next console cycle.
The Switch 2 version is expected to include enhanced visuals, improved loading times, and performance tweaks that take advantage of the new hardware. However, Nintendo hasn’t revealed if the upgrade will include any new content or features beyond technical improvements.
Importantly, players will be able to transfer their existing islands from the original version to the Switch 2, ensuring that hundreds of gameplay hours won’t go to waste. This seamless transition is likely to be a relief for longtime players who have invested years in building their perfect island getaway.
While fans are still hoping for a full sequel eventually, this upgraded version of New Horizons will serve as a solid bridge into the next era of Nintendo gaming. The Switch 2 edition is set to launch on January 15, 2026.
