Darkwing Duck Is Returning to Disney+ With Mark Hamill in the Lead
Disney+ has greenlit a new animated Darkwing Duck continuation, with Mark Hamill as Drake Mallard and Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack.
Disney+ has officially greenlit a new animated Darkwing Duck series, bringing Drake Mallard back to television more than three decades after the original show became a fixture of Disney’s early-1990s animation lineup. The revival is being positioned as a continuation rather than a clean reboot, with Darkwing returning to a world that has effectively forgotten him.
The biggest surprise is the new English-language voice cast. Mark Hamill will voice Drake Mallard and his masked alter ego, while Seth Rogen takes over as Launchpad McQuack and Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard. Lilimar joins as a new character named Duckie, with Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis and Kathryn Newton among the wider cast.
Darkwing has been missing for 35 years
The premise gives the revival a convenient way to acknowledge how much time has passed. According to the official logline reported alongside the announcement, Darkwing has spent 35 years trapped in an alternate world where nobody knows about his superhero exploits. His return to action begins when a rebellious teenager named Duckie appears with knowledge of his heroic past.
That setup also creates room for familiar faces and villains. The announced story points to the return of enemies including Negaduck and Megavolt, while Darkwing is expected to reunite with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana as the stakes expand beyond St. Canard to the fate of the universe.
A new cast, with the original creator involved
Sean Tretta, whose credits include Star Trek: Picard, and Borja Peña Gorostegui are executive producers on the new series. Rogen is also producing through Point Grey Pictures alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham. Importantly for longtime fans, original Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones has served as a consultant during development.
The casting makes clear that this is not simply a reunion of the original voice ensemble. Disney+ currently lists Jim Cummings, Christine Cavanaugh and Terry McGovern among the principal cast of the 1991 series, where Cummings voiced Darkwing, Cavanaugh played Gosalyn and McGovern voiced Launchpad. The new production instead puts Hamill, Caplan and Rogen in those central roles.
Hamill is particularly notable casting for animation fans. Although he remains closely associated with Star Wars, he has an extensive voice-acting career and is especially well known for playing the Joker across multiple Batman animated projects and games. Here, he gets a very different kind of caped crimefighter: theatrical, egotistical and perpetually eager for recognition.
The original series is still on Disney+
Darkwing Duck first arrived in 1991 and followed Drake Mallard as he tried to balance superhero work with life as the adoptive father of Gosalyn. Disney+ describes the original as an action-comedy built around Darkwing’s desire for fame, his attempts to do good in St. Canard and his partnership with Launchpad. Disney’s own recent retrospective says the original run totals 91 episodes.
The character has never disappeared completely. Darkwing has continued through comics, games and later Disney animation, including the 2017 DuckTales series. The newly ordered show, however, is the most direct return to the premise of the original television series in decades, and its 35-year story gap appears designed to make that history part of the plot rather than ignore it.
When will the new Darkwing Duck series premiere?
Disney has not announced a premiere date or release window yet. The confirmed details are the Disney+ destination, the core voice cast and the creative team, so any specific launch timing would be speculation for now. With the project now formally greenlit, the next useful updates will be a production schedule, first footage and a firm release date.
